Iraola Calls Champions League Clash with Friend Perez a ‘Special’ Occasion

LIVERPOOL: Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola anticipates a “special” encounter as his team prepares to face Villarreal, coached by his longtime friend Inigo Perez, in the Champions League at Anfield on Tuesday.

The two Spaniards share a rich history, having first crossed paths as young players at Athletic Bilbao. Iraola later brought Perez on board as an assistant coach during his tenure at Rayo Vallecano, further solidifying their bond.

“For me, it is a special game because Inigo is my friend,” Iraola stated during a pre-match press conference. “We have known each other since our academy days at Athletic Club and played together in the first team. After his retirement, I was eager to have him as my assistant. We’ve experienced a lot together.” He expressed excitement about the match, acknowledging that while it may feel strange to compete against a close friend, it is a privilege to do so in such a prestigious tournament.

When asked about their recent communication, Iraola admitted that the upcoming match has temporarily put a hold on their friendship. “When these things happen, it creates a unique dynamic,” he noted, emphasizing the competitive spirit that comes with such encounters.
