Asian Development Bank Finalizes $1.1 Billion Investment for ML-1 Modernization
ISLAMABAD: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is set to finalize a $1.1 billion investment program aimed at enhancing the efficiency, safety, and sustainability of railway transport along Pakistan Railways’ Main Line-1 (ML-1) between Karachi and Rohri by 2040.
The initiative follows extensive consultations with the Pakistani government and includes a fact-finding mission scheduled for January 2027. This mission will engage with federal and Sindh government officials to discuss project specifics and evaluate critical aspects such as environmental and social risks, labor conditions, and resource conservation.
This multi-tranche ADB facility will focus on upgrading the 480km Karachi-Rohri section, which serves as the country’s primary passenger and freight corridor. The funding will facilitate climate-resilient infrastructure improvements, modernize signaling and operations, and implement institutional measures to boost efficiency and regional connectivity.
Looking ahead, the ADB mission will assess various factors including land acquisition, biodiversity, and climate change impacts, ensuring that the project aligns with sustainable development goals. Stakeholders anticipate that this investment will significantly enhance the railway system, contributing to economic growth and improved transportation networks across Pakistan.
