Balochistan Assembly Rejects Resolution to Abolish Sardari System
QUETTA: The Balochistan Assembly on Monday dismissed a resolution aimed at abolishing the Sardari system in the province, along with a ban on the use of the titles Sardar and Nawab. The resolution, proposed by Jamaat-i-Islami MPA Hidayatur Rehman Baloch, sought immediate action against the traditional feudal system.
During the session, Speaker Abdul Khaliq Achakzai clarified that legislation abolishing the Sardari system had already been enacted in 1976, which applies nationwide. He referenced decisions made by the Balochistan High Court, which were upheld by the Federal Constitutional Court earlier this year, reinforcing the legal standing against the resolution.
The rejection of the resolution highlights ongoing tensions within the assembly, particularly between the ruling party and opposition members. Rehman expressed his disappointment, arguing that the Sardari system perpetuates feudalism and undermines democratic values in the province.
As the political landscape in Balochistan continues to evolve, the assembly’s decision may have implications for future legislative efforts aimed at reforming traditional power structures. Observers will be keen to see if further attempts to address the Sardari system will emerge in upcoming sessions.
