Bangladesh Steps In to Replace Pakistan at Asian Hockey Champions Trophy
ISLAMABAD: Bangladesh has accepted an invitation from the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) to replace Pakistan in the Men’s Asian Hockey Champions Trophy 2026, set to take place in India from October 27 to November 5.
The AHF announced the revised tournament schedule on Friday, following Pakistan’s withdrawal after its request for a neutral venue was denied. The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) had sought either the relocation of the tournament or a neutral venue for its matches, citing safety concerns amid the sensitive bilateral relations with India.
Despite the PHF’s formal request, both Hockey India and the AHF insisted that the tournament would proceed as planned in Jalandhar and Mohali. Consequently, the PHF informed the AHF that Pakistan would not participate under the current arrangements, leading to Bangladesh being invited to fill the vacant slot.
As one of the two reserve teams alongside Oman, Bangladesh’s acceptance of the offer marks a significant shift in the tournament’s lineup, raising questions about the implications for regional hockey dynamics and the ongoing tensions between Pakistan and India.
