Chinese Hackers Use Fake Discount Ads on Facebook to Target Global Shoppers
ISLAMABAD: A sophisticated phishing operation linked to Chinese hackers has been uncovered, targeting online shoppers with fake discount advertisements on platforms like Facebook and TikTok. The security firm Group-IB reported these findings on October 1, 2026, revealing that the phishing-as-a-service kit, dubbed Milk Dragon, has affected consumers in 66 countries since its inception in October 2025.
The investigation tracked 258 phishing pages associated with this operation, highlighting a worrying trend in cybercrime where scammers exploit popular social media marketplaces to lure unsuspecting users. Group-IB noted that this kit, also referred to as NaiLong, employs innovative tactics to deceive shoppers, making it a significant threat in the digital landscape.
This development raises serious concerns about online security and consumer protection, as millions of users rely on social media for shopping. Experts warn that such scams not only lead to financial losses for individuals but also undermine trust in e-commerce platforms, potentially impacting the broader economy.
In response to these findings, cybersecurity experts are urging users to remain vigilant and report suspicious ads. Authorities are expected to intensify investigations into these phishing schemes, and social media companies may need to enhance their security measures to protect users from such fraudulent activities.
