Citizen Scientists Map Pune’s Trees for a Greener Urban Future

Pune trees mapping

PUNE: Citizen scientists in Pune are actively mapping the city’s trees, aiming to enhance urban greenery and promote environmental awareness. This initiative, which began in 2023, involves local volunteers who collect data on tree species, health, and location, contributing to a comprehensive digital database.

The project, supported by environmental organizations, highlights the importance of urban forestry in combating climate change and improving air quality. According to project coordinator Anjali Deshmukh, “Mapping trees not only helps in conservation efforts but also engages the community in understanding their local environment better.” The initiative has already recorded over 5,000 trees, showcasing a diverse range of species.

This mapping effort has broader implications for Pune’s urban planning and sustainability goals. As cities face increasing challenges from pollution and urban heat, enhancing green spaces can significantly improve residents’ quality of life. Experts suggest that such grassroots movements can influence policy decisions and encourage local governments to invest more in urban greening projects.

Looking ahead, the citizen scientists plan to expand their efforts by organizing workshops and educational programs to involve more community members. They aim to collaborate with local authorities to integrate their findings into city planning, ensuring a greener future for Pune.
