Court Seeks Arguments on Defamation Suit Against Imran Khan by Shehbaz Sharif
LAHORE: A sessions court has requested arguments from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s counsel regarding a miscellaneous application filed by a lawyer representing PTI founding chairman Imran Khan. The application seeks permission for Khan’s lawyer to meet him in jail concerning a Rs10 billion defamation suit initiated by Sharif.
Khan’s counsel, Muhammad Hussain Chotia, argued for the necessity of meeting his client at Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi, to obtain instructions and signatures on essential documents related to the case. He informed the court that jail authorities were denying access to Khan and requested the court to direct the jail superintendent to allow the meeting.
The Additional District & Sessions Judge Yalmaz Ghani adjourned the hearing until October 31, asking for arguments from the prime minister’s legal representative. In his defamation suit filed in 2017, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif claims that Imran Khan made unfounded allegations against him linked to the Panama Papers controversy, seeking Rs10 billion in compensation for the alleged defamatory statements.
This legal battle underscores the ongoing tensions between the two political leaders and reflects the broader implications for Pakistan’s political landscape, where allegations and counter-allegations are common. The upcoming court proceedings are expected to further illuminate the contentious relationship between the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
