Energy Minister Launches New System to Target Electricity Theft in Pakistan
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Energy Minister Owais Leghari announced the implementation of a new system aimed at combating electricity theft by targeting specific transformers in affected areas. This initiative, known as the Electricity Theft Management System (EPMS), will identify and disable transformers that are linked to illegal electricity usage.
During a visit to the expansion project at DG Khan Airport, Leghari emphasized that the new system will enhance the efficiency of electricity distribution and ensure that only those transformers associated with theft are shut down, rather than entire feeder lines. This targeted approach is expected to significantly reduce losses incurred by the national grid.
The implications of this initiative are substantial for both the economy and the citizens of Pakistan. By curbing electricity theft, the government aims to improve the financial health of the energy sector, which has been plagued by losses due to illegal connections. This move is also seen as a step towards ensuring fair electricity distribution and reducing the burden on law-abiding consumers.
Looking ahead, the Energy Ministry plans to roll out the EPMS across various regions, with further assessments and adjustments based on its initial implementation. Stakeholders are optimistic that this system will pave the way for more comprehensive reforms in the energy sector.
