Erdogan and Aliyev Reinforce Alliance Amid Rising Tensions Over Hijab Policy

Erdogan Aliyev alliance

BAKU: Turkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev reaffirmed their nations’ commitment to unity on Sunday, seeking to mend a public rift that has emerged between the two closely allied countries.

The tensions escalated in September when Azerbaijan implemented new school uniform regulations that effectively banned Islamic headscarves in educational institutions, a move that sparked protests domestically and drew criticism from Erdogan’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP). Presidential adviser Oktay Saral publicly urged Azerbaijan to reconsider the restrictions, emphasizing the importance of religious freedoms.

In response, Aliyev’s Yeni Azerbaijan party condemned the AKP’s comments as unwarranted interference in Azerbaijan’s internal affairs, highlighting the delicate balance of sovereignty and regional solidarity. This incident underscores the complexities of the relationship between the two nations, particularly regarding cultural and religious freedoms.

Looking ahead, both leaders are expected to engage in further discussions to solidify their alliance and address the underlying issues that have caused friction. Future diplomatic meetings may focus on enhancing cooperation in various sectors, including education and cultural exchange, to foster a more harmonious relationship.
