Ex-Joint Chiefs Chairman Warns of Escalating Pak-India Tensions
ISLAMABAD: A former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee has cautioned that neglecting the root causes of the Pakistan-India conflict could lead to increasingly perilous confrontations in the future. Retired General Zubair Mahmood Hayat made these remarks during the closing session of the second Islamabad Non-Proliferation Conference, hosted by the Strategic Vision Institute (SVI) on Wednesday.
Gen Hayat emphasized that merely resolving crises without addressing their underlying issues only paves the way for future conflicts. He pointed out that the longstanding Kashmir dispute cannot be dismissed as a mere administrative issue, and similarly, the management of water resources should not be weaponized. He called for urgent dialogue to resolve the Kashmir issue and restore the Indus Waters Treaty, which governs water sharing between the two nations.
The implications of ongoing tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbours are profound, affecting regional stability and international relations. Gen Hayat’s warnings highlight the necessity for both countries to engage in constructive dialogue to prevent further escalation and ensure peace in South Asia.
Looking ahead, the international community and regional stakeholders may need to facilitate discussions aimed at addressing these critical issues. The call for a renewed focus on the Kashmir dispute and water-sharing agreements is essential for fostering a more stable and secure environment in the region.
