Fazlur Rehman Emerges as Key Mediator Between Govt and Opposition PTI

ISLAMABAD: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has once again emerged as a pivotal figure in Pakistan’s political landscape, as both the ruling coalition government and the primary opposition party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), reach out to him to defuse mounting political confrontation.

Despite holding a relatively modest numerical presence in current assemblies—with just 10 seats in the National Assembly, 18 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and 12 in Balochistan—the veteran politician’s strategic positioning retains significant weight. While JUI-F occupies opposition benches in both key provinces, its crucial upper house presence of seven members in the Senate provides the party with vital leverage during critical legislative showdowns and parliamentary votes.

Observers point out that while some analysts question whether his parliamentary numbers allow him to pressure either side directly, Fazlur Rehman has repeatedly demonstrated a masterclass in political maneuvering and coalition negotiation. His long history of navigating complex political divides makes him one of the few figures capable of maintaining open communication channels with both the government hierarchy and the PTI leadership amidst deep polarisations.

The success of these preliminary mediation efforts could prove crucial for stabilizing Pakistan’s volatile political climate, which has severely impacted legislative functions and broader governance predictability. In the coming days, senior delegations from both rival factions are expected to hold formal consultative meetings at his residence in Islamabad to establish a foundational agenda for prospective inter-party talks.
