FIA Uncovers Rs120 Billion Illegal Gambling Syndicate Via JazzCash

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has uncovered a massive financial syndicate involving illegal gambling transactions worth nearly Rs120 billion conducted through the mobile wallet service JazzCash. The revelation has triggered an unprecedented crisis in Pakistan’s digital payments sector, forcing VEON-owned JazzCash to abruptly terminate over 100 third-party aggregator accounts under intense regulatory scrutiny. The crackdown marks one of the largest financial crime investigations in the country’s fintech history.

According to law enforcement officials, the illicit network systematically exploited the digital wallet infrastructure to facilitate online betting and gambling operations across the country. In response to the widening probe, JazzCash took swift action to block suspicious merchant channels, which has inadvertently disrupted operations for several legitimate digital businesses that rely on these aggregators for payment processing. The FIA’s cybercrime wing is currently analyzing transaction logs and digital footprints to trace the ultimate beneficiaries of the multi-billion rupee network.

This massive security breach highlights the growing vulnerabilities within Pakistan’s rapidly expanding fintech ecosystem and raises serious questions regarding compliance with Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (CFT) regulations. Financial analysts warn that the collateral damage to legitimate startups and e-commerce merchants could dampen investor confidence in the country’s digital economy, which has otherwise shown robust growth. Experts emphasize the urgent need for more robust Know Your Customer (KYC) protocols to prevent future exploitation.

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) are expected to initiate a joint audit of mobile financial services to tighten oversight on digital transactions. Meanwhile, the FIA is expanding its crackdown to identify other mobile wallet platforms potentially being exploited by illegal gambling rings, with further arrests and account freezes anticipated in the coming days as the investigation widens.
