Flour Millers Increase Prices Again Amid Sindh Wheat Stock Release Plans

KARACHI: Flour millers in Sindh have raised prices by Rs6 per kg, adding to a total increase of Rs20 per kg in just a few days, despite the provincial government’s plans to release wheat stocks at Rs12,500 per 100kg bag starting October 15.

The latest hike affects various flour varieties, with prices now set at Rs161 for flour No. 2.5, Rs173 for maida, and Rs176 for fine flour. This surge comes as the provincial government and city administration appear to overlook the escalating costs, leaving consumers to bear the brunt of the price shock.

This increase poses significant challenges for consumers already grappling with rising living costs. As retailers adjust their prices to reflect the millers’ hikes, households may face further financial strain, exacerbating the ongoing inflationary pressures in the region.

The Sindh government currently holds 346,414 tonnes of wheat stock, with plans to augment this with an additional 190,000 tonnes from the Pakistan Agriculture Storage and Services Corporation and 300,000 tonnes of imported wheat. This move aims to stabilize flour prices, but the effectiveness of these measures remains uncertain as millers continue to raise prices.
