France Imposes Curfews Amid Escalating Unrest Over Rising Prices

PARIS: France has announced partial curfews in Paris and several other cities following violent demonstrations over soaring prices that erupted over the weekend. The unrest marks some of the most severe street violence seen in recent years, prompting the government to take immediate action.

Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu indicated that a state of emergency could be on the table as the interior minister reported that police had ‘lost control’ during the protests. The Louvre Museum was closed to tourists on Monday due to a small group of student protesters, highlighting the disruption caused by the unrest.

The government faces criticism for its failure to anticipate and effectively respond to the violence, with officials pledging to restore order amid rising public anger. The unrest comes at a critical time, just six months before France is set to elect a successor to President Emmanuel Macron, raising concerns about political stability.

In response to the escalating situation, authorities have enforced curfews from Monday evening to Tuesday morning in cities including Paris, Lille, and Lyon, aimed at protecting businesses. In Paris, a curfew is set from 11 PM (2 AM PKT), with demonstrations banned from 8 PM. Organizers have already called for further protests next Saturday, suggesting that the unrest may continue.
