Funding Shortages Threaten Gujrat’s Drainage and Sewerage Projects
GUJRAT: Ongoing drainage and sewerage schemes in Gujrat city face significant delays due to a lack of funding, raising concerns about the safety of residents. The Gujrat water and sanitation agency (Wasa) and the irrigation department requested Rs3.71 billion for the current fiscal year to complete these essential projects, but only Rs1.9 billion has been allocated by the Punjab government.
Officials indicate that the deadline for completing the ongoing schemes is set for December 2026. However, the limited financial resources could hinder timely completion. Furthermore, an additional Rs3.46 billion is necessary to initiate new drainage schemes aimed at safeguarding both suburban and urban populations, yet no funds have been allocated for these initiatives.
In September 2025, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced a comprehensive uplift package to address the chronic issues plaguing Gujrat’s sewerage and drainage systems, leading to the approval of schemes worth Rs17 billion by the housing department. This initiative underscores the critical need for investment in infrastructure to protect public health and safety.
As the situation develops, stakeholders are urged to advocate for increased funding to ensure the timely execution of these vital projects. Community leaders and residents are calling for transparency and accountability from the authorities to prevent further delays and potential hazards.
