Gabon Seeks Fair Share of Global Ibogaine Market Amid Medicinal Plant Boom
LIBREVILLE: Gabon is advocating for a more equitable distribution of profits from the booming global market for ibogaine, a powerful psychoactive substance derived from the iboga plant, which is native to the region. This push comes as the country recognizes the growing international interest in the medicinal properties of ibogaine, particularly in treating addiction.
Officials from Gabon’s Ministry of Forests and Environment have stated that while the global demand for ibogaine is surging, local communities are not reaping the benefits. “We must ensure that our people and ecosystems are prioritized in this lucrative market,” said Minister Lee White during a recent press conference. The government is now exploring regulatory frameworks to ensure sustainable harvesting and fair compensation for local producers.
This initiative holds significant implications for Gabon’s economy and its indigenous populations, who have traditionally used iboga in spiritual and healing practices. By securing a fair share of the profits, Gabon aims to bolster its economy while promoting environmental sustainability and protecting its rich biodiversity.
Looking ahead, Gabon plans to host an international conference later this year to discuss sustainable practices in the iboga trade and to engage with global stakeholders. The government hopes this will lead to collaborative efforts that benefit both local communities and international markets.
