Gaza’s Displaced Residents Await Return Amid Ongoing Reconstruction Delays
CAIRO: Nearly three years after fleeing Gaza due to devastating Israeli airstrikes, Omar al-Hassayna remains in Cairo, longing for the day he can return to his homeland. Over 100,000 Gazans, according to Palestinian Authority estimates, are still stranded abroad, grappling with the grief of lost family members and destroyed homes.
“I left Gaza and came to Egypt, the land of Kinana, but this will not be forgotten,” Hassayna expressed, emphasizing his desire to return to a stable Gaza. He yearns for the opportunity to contribute positively to his community once conditions allow.
The ceasefire that was expected to initiate a reconstruction process in Gaza is still in limbo nearly a year later. The lack of progress has left many displaced individuals like Hassayna in a state of uncertainty, affecting their mental well-being and future prospects.
As the international community watches, the need for a sustainable political solution and effective reconstruction efforts becomes increasingly urgent. Stakeholders are expected to convene in upcoming meetings to discuss the path forward for Gaza, but tangible results remain elusive.
