Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly Approves Local Government Act, Paving Way for Elections
GILGIT: The Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) Assembly has taken a significant step towards holding local bodies elections for the first time in over two decades by passing the amended GB Local Government Act 2026 on Wednesday. This landmark decision comes after a prolonged delay, with the election date to be announced following the governor’s assent.
During a session led by Deputy Speaker Malik Kifayatur Rehman, the assembly approved the amended act by a majority vote. Minister for Local Bodies Zulfiqar Ali Murad introduced the revised draft, emphasizing the importance of local governance in the region. The assembly had previously passed the act, but it was returned by GB Governor Syed Mehdi Shah for reconsideration due to several objections.
This legislative move is expected to empower local communities and enhance governance in Gilgit-Baltistan, a region that has faced challenges in local representation for years. The act also includes a provision reserving 17% of seats for women, promoting gender inclusivity in local governance. Additionally, the assembly approved a separate bill to establish the GB Information Technology Board, aiming to boost the region’s technological landscape.
With the passage of this act, citizens of Gilgit-Baltistan can anticipate a more participatory governance structure. The assembly’s actions signal a commitment to democratic processes and local empowerment. The next steps include awaiting the governor’s assent to finalize the legislation and set a timeline for the elections.
