Government Urged to Establish Forum to Combat Online Harassment of Women
ISLAMABAD: Ataa Tarar, a prominent member of the National Assembly, has called for the establishment of a dedicated forum to address the rising incidents of online harassment faced by women in Pakistan. During a recent session, he emphasized the urgent need for protective measures to safeguard women’s rights in the digital space.
Tarar highlighted the alarming statistics that reveal a significant increase in online harassment cases, which have left many women feeling vulnerable and unsafe. He stated, “Women are often subjected to distressing experiences online, and it is imperative that we take proactive steps to prevent this menace. A dedicated forum would provide a platform for victims to seek help and for authorities to implement effective strategies against such crimes.”
This initiative, if realized, could have far-reaching implications for women’s safety and empowerment in Pakistan. It underscores a growing recognition of the need to address cyber harassment as a serious issue that affects not only individual victims but also the broader societal fabric. By fostering a safer online environment, the government could encourage more women to engage in digital spaces without fear.
In the coming weeks, Tarar plans to present a formal proposal to the National Assembly, urging lawmakers to prioritize this issue. Stakeholders from various sectors, including technology and law enforcement, are expected to be consulted to develop a comprehensive approach to combat online harassment.
