Hubco Announces BYD Vehicle Production to Start with Imported Components
KARACHI: Hub Power Company (Hubco) has revealed that the production of BYD vehicles will initially depend entirely on imported raw materials and components, with plans for gradual localisation over time. This strategy aims to enhance cost competitiveness and reduce reliance on imports, as stated by Hubco management during a corporate briefing on October 20, 2026.
According to Hubco, the long-term goal is to localise up to 80 percent of the vehicle production. The BYD plant is anticipated to commence operations within the next four to five weeks, targeting an initial sales run rate of approximately 1,000 to 1,500 vehicles per month as production scales up. The company also plans to introduce additional models in a phased manner, focusing on segments that can yield significant sales volumes.
This development comes amid intense competition in the electric vehicle (EV) segment, particularly from Chinese completely built-up (CBU) vehicles, as noted by analysts from Topline Securities. Lucky Cement, another key player in the market, has indicated that it aims to begin local production of EV models by the first quarter of 2027, further intensifying the competitive landscape.
As the BYD plant gears up for operations, stakeholders will be closely monitoring its impact on the local automotive market and the broader economy. The shift towards localisation could potentially reshape the dynamics of vehicle production in Pakistan, paving the way for increased domestic manufacturing capabilities.
