IMF: AI Productivity Gains Could Mitigate Asia’s Ageing Workforce Crisis

WASHINGTON: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has stated that artificial intelligence (AI) could play a crucial role in addressing the challenges posed by Asia’s ageing population, provided its implementation is equitable across the region. This assertion was made during the launch of an IMF publication focused on the region’s demographic and technological transformations.

IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva emphasized that AI could boost economic growth in advanced Asian economies, where ageing populations are prevalent, by as much as one percentage point. She noted, “If countries harness productivity gains from AI, they can effectively counteract demographic pressures.” The report highlights that nations like China, Japan, and South Korea could see a reduction of nearly 25% in their working-age populations by 2050, a trend that could be mitigated through AI-driven productivity improvements.

The implications of these findings are significant for the region’s economic landscape. As countries grapple with shrinking workforces, the integration of AI technologies could not only sustain but potentially enhance economic output. However, Krishna Srinivasan, director of the IMF’s Asia and Pacific department, warned that policymakers must ensure that the benefits of AI are distributed fairly to avoid exacerbating existing inequalities.

Looking ahead, the IMF calls for collaborative efforts among Asian nations to develop strategies that maximize the benefits of AI while addressing the socio-economic disparities that may arise. Future discussions and policy frameworks will be essential in shaping a balanced approach to AI adoption in the region.
