Islamabad High Court Disposes of PTI Lawmakers’ Detention Petitions

PTI lawmakers detention

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has declared petitions challenging the preventive detention of two Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers and two others as infructuous, following the government’s acknowledgment that the initial detention orders had expired.

In a ruling addressing four related petitions filed by Khushdil Khan, Adil Khan Bazai, Dawar Khan Kundi, and Basharatullah, Justice Khadim Hussain Soomro scrutinized the detention orders issued under Section 3 of the West Pakistan Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance, 1960. The petitioners, represented by Dr. Babar Awan, argued that the orders, dated September 21, 2026, were issued without proper consideration and violated their constitutional rights.

The court’s decision highlights ongoing tensions in Pakistan’s political landscape, particularly regarding the treatment of opposition figures. The petitioners contended that their detention was politically motivated and that they were denied essential information to contest the allegations against them.

Looking ahead, the court did not comment on subsequent detention orders that were not presented in the proceedings, leaving open the possibility for further legal challenges. This case underscores the continuing scrutiny of government actions against political opponents in Pakistan.
