Journalists Face Growing Threats as Impunity for Attacks Rises Worldwide

Impunity for Journalists

ISLAMABAD: As the world observes the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, the alarming rise in threats against media professionals is underscored by the theme ‘Threats Evolve. Impunity Endures’. This year, the focus is on the sophisticated methods employed to silence journalists, including drone attacks, online harassment, and legal intimidation, with perpetrators often escaping justice.

According to Unesco, a staggering 189 journalists were killed in 2024 and 2025, primarily in conflict zones, yet justice remains elusive in most cases. The global impunity rate has surged to 86%, marking the first increase since Unesco began tracking these statistics in 2012. This trend sends a chilling message that journalists can be attacked or even killed without fear of repercussions.

The implications of this growing impunity are profound, affecting not only the safety of journalists but also the broader landscape of freedom of expression and democracy. As journalists face increasing dangers, the public’s right to information is jeopardized, leading to a less informed society and weakened accountability for those in power.

Moving forward, it is crucial for governments and international organizations to take decisive action against the impunity surrounding crimes against journalists. This includes implementing stronger legal protections, conducting thorough investigations, and holding perpetrators accountable to ensure a safer environment for media professionals.
