Journalists in Balochistan Mark Black Day to Protest Media Suppression
QUETTA: Journalists across Balochistan observed a Black Day on Tuesday, responding to a call from the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) to commemorate the November 3, 2007 emergency and to protest against the forced dismissal of journalists, the closure of media bureau offices, and the non-payment of salaries.
Black flags were raised at press clubs throughout the province, with journalists donning black armbands and staging demonstrations to draw attention to the escalating challenges faced by the media industry. In Quetta, the Balochistan Union of Journalists (BUJ) organized a protest outside the Quetta Press Club, where a sit-in was held, attended by a significant number of journalists, lawyers, and civil society representatives.
This observance highlights the ongoing struggle for media freedom in Pakistan, where journalists face increasing threats and pressures. The PFUJ’s initiative aims to unite media professionals in their fight against censorship and to advocate for their rights, emphasizing the critical role of a free press in a democratic society.
Looking ahead, the PFUJ plans to escalate its campaign for media rights, with further protests and discussions scheduled to address the pressing issues of job security and financial stability for journalists in Balochistan.
