Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Asserts Local Rights to Provincial Resources
PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi has declared that the people of the province hold the primary right to its natural resources. Speaking at a ceremony in Peshawar, Kundi emphasized, “No one should think that foreigners will come and loot this province. Till I am here, the people of the province will have the first right to its resources.”
Kundi’s remarks come in the wake of allegations from Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, who suggested that the recent imposition of governor’s rule and emergency measures in KP were motivated by a desire to control the province’s resources. The governor clarified that while he prioritizes local rights, he is open to joint ventures with external parties, whether foreign or from other parts of Pakistan, provided they collaborate with the local populace.
This statement is significant as it underscores the ongoing tensions surrounding resource management in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The governor’s commitment to prioritizing local interests may serve to alleviate concerns among residents about potential exploitation by outside entities, particularly in the context of the province’s rich mineral resources.
Looking ahead, Kundi’s administration is expected to focus on safeguarding the interests of KP’s citizens while navigating the complexities of governance under the current emergency rule. The political landscape may evolve further as discussions around resource management and local governance continue to unfold.
