Khyber Teaching Hospital Achieves Milestone with First Robotic Knee Surgery

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Teaching Hospital (KTH) has made history by performing Pakistan’s first robotic-assisted knee replacement surgery at a public-sector facility. The groundbreaking procedure was executed by the Department of Orthopaedic under the guidance of Chairman Associate Professor Muhammad Siraj, with the surgical team led by Prof Awal Hakeem.

This innovative surgery marks a significant advancement in medical technology within the country, showcasing KTH’s commitment to providing state-of-the-art healthcare services. Prof Hakeem expressed pride in the achievement, stating, “This procedure not only enhances the precision of surgery but also significantly improves recovery times for patients, offering them a better quality of life.”

The introduction of robotic-assisted surgeries is expected to revolutionize orthopaedic care in Pakistan, providing patients with access to advanced medical technologies that were previously unavailable in the public sector. This development could lead to increased patient confidence in local healthcare services and reduce the need for overseas medical procedures.

Looking ahead, KTH plans to expand its robotic surgery program, aiming to train more surgeons in this cutting-edge technology. The hospital is also exploring partnerships with international medical institutions to further enhance its capabilities and service offerings.
