KPT Launches Direct MSC Europe Service to Enhance Shipping Efficiency

KARACHI: The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) is set to launch a new direct shipping service to Europe, commencing on October 26, as part of its strategy to reduce reliance on transshipment. Chairman retired Rear Admiral Shahid Ahmed announced this initiative during a meeting with the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Monday.

Ahmed highlighted that the introduction of this service is expected to significantly enhance vessel operations, potentially saving the economy between Rs30-40 billion annually by reducing unloading times from seven days to just 1-1.5 days. He noted that over 160 vessels have already called for bunkering services, a sector he anticipates will grow to exceed Rs300 billion annually within the next two to three years.

This move is part of KPT’s broader efforts to modernize its operations, which include an investment of Rs2-2.5 billion in artificial intelligence, automation, and digital systems. Key infrastructure projects, such as the Shahrah-i-Bhutto, the KPT-Pipri Freight Corridor, and the M-10 link, are also underway to alleviate congestion and improve connectivity.

Looking ahead, KPT aims to double its direct shipping services by December, further enhancing trade efficiency and positioning Karachi as a pivotal maritime hub in the region.
