Lahore ATC Denies Police Further Remand of PTI Leader Hammad Azhar

Hammad Azhar

LAHORE: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Lahore has denied a police request for further physical remand of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Hammad Azhar, sending him to jail on judicial remand in connection with the Jinnah House attack case.

The Sarwar Road police had previously booked several PTI leaders and workers for their alleged involvement in the attack and vandalism of Jinnah House during the protests on May 9, 2023, which erupted following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Azhar’s family claims he was arrested on September 5, while police initially stated they were unaware of his arrest until he was presented before the ATC on September 7.

This ruling marks a significant moment in the ongoing legal challenges faced by PTI leaders amid heightened political tensions in Pakistan. The case has drawn considerable public attention, reflecting the broader implications of political dissent and state response in the country.

Looking ahead, legal experts anticipate further developments as the case progresses through the judicial system. The PTI’s response and any potential appeals against the ATC’s decision will be closely monitored, as they may influence the party’s strategy in the face of ongoing political challenges.
