Lahore to Host 10-Day Basant Festival from January 29 to February 7, 2024

LAHORE: The Punjab capital is set to celebrate the vibrant Basant festival for ten days, from January 29 to February 7, 2024, with a pause on February 5 to observe Kashmir Day. This schedule was approved by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz during a meeting held on Wednesday.

Earlier this year, Lahore marked the return of the Basant festival after an 18-year hiatus, celebrating from February 6 to 8. The festival had been banned in 2007 due to safety concerns, including fatalities and injuries linked to dangerous kite-flying practices and celebratory gunfire. Chief Minister Nawaz emphasized the importance of the festival as a cultural gift to the people of Lahore, aimed at promoting the rich traditions of Punjab.

The revival of Basant is expected to boost local tourism and invigorate the economy, as the festival attracts visitors from across the region. It serves not only as a celebration of spring but also as a platform to showcase Punjab’s cultural heritage, fostering community spirit and unity among residents.

Authorities have been directed to ensure comprehensive arrangements for the festivities, which will include various cultural events and activities. As the date approaches, further announcements regarding specific events and safety measures are anticipated.
