Lebanon Army Seizes 200 Kilograms of Explosives Linked to Hezbollah
BEIRUT: Lebanon’s army announced on Monday the seizure of approximately 200 kilograms of explosives, following Prime Minister Nawaf Salam’s commitment to tackle illegal weapons in the country. This operation comes just days after security forces intercepted a truck believed to be transporting materials associated with Hezbollah.
The army reported that the explosives, packed in bags and ready for smuggling, were found in the northeastern Hermel region, near the Syrian border. The smugglers reportedly fled back into Syria upon the army’s arrival. A judicial official confirmed that the explosives, identified as C4, were being transported on a mule through an illegal crossing in the town of Qasr.
This seizure marks the third such incident this month, highlighting ongoing concerns about Hezbollah’s activities in Lebanon. Just days prior, authorities detained two suspected Hezbollah members at a security checkpoint in Dahr al-Baidar while they were transporting half a tonne of explosives, including 250 kilograms of TNT and 250 kilograms of C4, en route to Beirut.
The Lebanese government’s crackdown on illegal arms is seen as a critical step in addressing security challenges and restoring public trust. As the situation develops, further investigations are expected, and the international community will be watching closely for Lebanon’s next moves in managing its internal security and relations with Hezbollah.
