Lyon Edges Past Crystal Palace in Europa League Thriller, Sunderland Triumphs Late

LONDON: Olympique Lyonnais secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over Crystal Palace in the Europa League on Thursday, while Sunderland staged a dramatic late comeback against Portuguese second-division side Torreense.

Crystal Palace manager Pierre Sage faced a painful return to his former club as the UEFA Conference League champions suffered their fourth defeat of the season across all competitions. “It’s a very disappointing return because we lost. I can’t take satisfaction from coming back home or seeing familiar faces when the result isn’t there,” Sage remarked to UEFA.com. He added, “The scoreline may have been close, but there was a big difference in the way the two teams played. We were nowhere near our usual standards in the first half.”

Lyon took an early lead with Corentin Tolisso scoring within the first 10 minutes, followed by Ernest Nuamah doubling the advantage just before halftime. Yeremy Pino managed to pull one back for Palace early in the second half, but it was not enough to change the outcome.

The results from this matchday highlight the competitive nature of the Europa League, with Bayer Leverkusen, Juventus, Benfica, and Bournemouth also maintaining their perfect starts to the league phase. As the tournament progresses, teams will need to sharpen their performances to secure advancement in the knockout stages.
