Michael Bracewell Shifts to Casual Contract, Pursues BBL Opportunity
WELLINGTON: New Zealand all-rounder Michael Bracewell will transition to a casual contract for the 2026-27 season as he seeks opportunities in Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL), the New Zealand Cricket (NZC) board announced on Monday.
Bracewell, who has represented New Zealand in 105 matches across all formats, is set to participate in the limited-overs series against India starting this month. He joins a growing list of players, including Mark Chapman and Lockie Ferguson, who have opted for the casual contract system, allowing them to engage in lucrative Twenty20 leagues while remaining available for national selection.
“As a white-ball only player, this felt like too good of an opportunity to pass up,” Bracewell stated. He emphasized his ongoing commitment to the Black Caps, expressing eagerness to contribute to the upcoming India tour and future white-ball series. In his absence, batter Nick Kelly will take his place on NZC’s central contract list.
This shift not only highlights Bracewell’s ambition to expand his career in T20 cricket but also reflects a broader trend among cricketers seeking financial opportunities in various leagues while balancing national duties. As the cricketing landscape evolves, fans will be keen to see how this impacts team dynamics and player performances in the coming months.
