Mitchell Marsh Praises Team’s Growth After ODI Victory Over South Africa
POTCHEFSTROOM: Australian captain Mitchell Marsh commended his team’s significant improvements following a convincing 45-run victory over South Africa in the third and final One-Day International on Wednesday.
Australia set a challenging target of 322 runs for nine wickets, but rain intervened, leading to the application of the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method, which halted South Africa’s innings at 145 for four after 28 overs. Marsh noted, “I thought the batting in particular showed some real improvement, especially from a few of our young guys. It was a disappointing series but nice to finish with a win.”
This victory, albeit in a series lost 2-1 to South Africa, offers a glimmer of hope for the Australian side as they prepare for the 2027 Cricket World Cup, which will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Marsh emphasized the gradual development of his players, many of whom are still gaining experience at the international level, particularly in challenging conditions against a strong home team.
Looking ahead, Marsh expressed regret that the match did not reach its full conclusion, especially as Ryan Rickelton was batting well at 71 not out, representing South Africa’s last specialist batsman. The team will now focus on building on this performance as they aim to enhance their competitiveness on the global stage.
