Pakistan Auto Industry Demands Independent Audit of Government Tariff Data
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA) has formally requested an independent audit of the tariff data and calculations utilized in the National Tariff Policy (NTP). This call comes amid concerns that inaccuracies in the data could jeopardize domestic manufacturing, investment, and job creation within the sector.
PAMA’s Director General, Razi, emphasized the importance of reliable tariff data in a letter addressed to Haroon Akhtar Khan, the Prime Minister’s adviser on industries and production. He warned that without a thorough review, the automotive industry may face significant challenges that could hinder its growth and sustainability.
The implications of this request are profound, as the automotive sector is a critical component of Pakistan’s economy, contributing to both employment and industrial development. Stakeholders fear that flawed tariff calculations could lead to increased costs for manufacturers, ultimately affecting consumers and the broader economy.
In response to PAMA’s concerns, it is expected that the government will initiate discussions to address the audit request. Upcoming meetings between industry representatives and government officials are anticipated, aiming to ensure transparency and accuracy in tariff data moving forward.
