Pakistan Commits to Targeted and Limited Subsidies Amid IMF Discussions
BANGKOK: Pakistan has assured the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that its subsidies will remain targeted, time-bound, and budget-neutral as part of its ongoing economic reform program. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb reaffirmed this commitment during a meeting with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva on Wednesday, October 14, on the sidelines of the 2026 World Bank Group–IMF Annual Meetings.
During the meeting, Aurangzeb emphasized the government’s dedication to maintaining fiscal discipline while implementing necessary reforms. He stated, “Our approach to subsidies is designed to support the most vulnerable without compromising our budgetary targets.” This assurance comes as Pakistan navigates a challenging economic landscape marked by inflation and fiscal constraints.
The implications of this commitment are significant for Pakistan’s economy and its relationship with international financial institutions. By ensuring that subsidies are limited and targeted, the government aims to stabilize its economy while addressing the needs of its citizens. This strategy is crucial for maintaining investor confidence and securing further financial assistance from the IMF.
Looking ahead, the Pakistani government plans to continue its dialogue with the IMF and other international partners to ensure the successful implementation of its economic reforms. Upcoming meetings are expected to focus on further fiscal strategies and the potential for additional support to bolster the economy.
