Pakistan Enforces Mandatory Internships Across All 282 Universities
ISLAMABAD: In a major move aimed at bridging the gap between academic education and industry requirements, the federal government has confirmed that practical internships are now mandatory for students across all 282 public and private universities in Pakistan. Speaking during the Question Hour in the National Assembly on Monday, Parliamentary Secretary for Federal Education and Professional Training Rabia Naseem Farooqi stated that the policy was designed to equip graduates with essential professional experience before entering the job market.
Clarifying the scope of the decision, Farooqi highlighted that the regulation applies uniformly to every higher education institution nationwide. The policy framework, initially introduced in 2023 by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) in coordination with federal educational authorities, directs universities to establish active career development centers and build structured partnerships with corporate, industrial, and public sector organizations to facilitate placements.
The policy addresses long-standing concerns regarding youth unemployment and the skill mismatch prevalent in Pakistan’s evolving economy. Education policy analysts and industry experts have repeatedly noted that traditional academic degree programs frequently lack practical application, leaving fresh graduates ill-prepared for modern professional environments. By making hands-on corporate experience a mandatory prerequisite for graduation, the government aims to enhance graduate employability and spur economic productivity.
Moving forward, the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training alongside the HEC will institute formal monitoring procedures to ensure full compliance across all public and private campuses. Federal authorities are also working to implement digital placement tracking tools to monitor internship quality, evaluate corporate feedback, and streamline career integration across key sectors including technology, business administration, and engineering.
