Pakistan Extends E-Passport Transition Deadline to October 2026

ISLAMABAD: The Directorate General of Immigration and Passports has announced a revised deadline for the mandatory transition to e-passports, extending the issuance and renewal of machine-readable passports (MRPs) until October 22, 2026. From October 23, 2026, all passport offices in Pakistan and its diplomatic missions abroad will exclusively issue e-passports to new applicants.

This decision comes as part of the government’s efforts to modernize the passport system and enhance security measures. An official from the Directorate stated, “The extension allows citizens more time to transition to the new e-passport system, which is designed to streamline travel and improve identification processes.”

The implications of this change are significant for Pakistani citizens, particularly those planning international travel. The shift to e-passports is expected to facilitate smoother border crossings and reduce the risk of identity fraud. Additionally, it aligns Pakistan with global standards in passport technology, potentially enhancing the country’s international standing.

Looking ahead, the Directorate plans to conduct awareness campaigns to educate the public about the benefits of e-passports and the application process. As the deadline approaches, further updates and guidelines will be issued to ensure a seamless transition for all passport applicants.
