Pakistan Issues Stark Warning to Kabul Amid Ongoing Border Clashes
KHYBER: Pakistani and Afghan border forces engaged in armed clashes on Sunday, resulting in the temporary closure of the Torkham border crossing and the death of a civilian due to mortar shelling near Angoor Adda. The skirmishes erupted over a disputed check post, escalating tensions between the two nations.
The Pakistani military issued a stern warning to the Afghan Taliban, stating they would not withstand the repercussions if Kabul fails to control terrorist activities emanating from its territory. A military spokesperson emphasized that the Taliban would face ‘unbearable punishment’ for harboring terrorists. Additionally, Pakistan accused India of being the ‘prime contractor’ behind terrorism in the region.
This latest round of violence comes as the United States acknowledged Pakistan’s concerns regarding cross-border attacks and expressed willingness to mediate in reducing tensions. The situation at Torkham stabilized after a five-hour closure, which followed an hour-long exchange of gunfire.
Looking ahead, diplomatic efforts are expected to intensify as both nations navigate the complexities of border security and counter-terrorism. The international community, particularly the US, may play a crucial role in facilitating dialogue to prevent further escalation.
