Pakistan Moves to Introduce Laws Addressing AI-Related Crimes

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is considering the introduction of specific legislation aimed at addressing crimes involving artificial intelligence (AI), as announced by Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar. Speaking to Arab News on Thursday, Tarar highlighted that while existing cybercrime provisions and general criminal laws cover some AI-assisted offenses, there is a pressing need for additional legal measures to tackle the emerging challenges posed by this rapidly evolving technology.

Tarar’s comments come in the wake of ongoing investigations into various incidents where AI has been implicated in criminal activities. He emphasized the importance of adapting the legal framework to ensure that it remains relevant and effective in the face of technological advancements. The proposed legislation aims to fill the gaps in current laws and provide law enforcement with the necessary tools to combat AI-related crimes.

This initiative reflects a growing recognition of the implications of AI on society, particularly concerning privacy, security, and ethical considerations. As AI technologies become more integrated into daily life, the potential for misuse increases, prompting the government to take proactive steps to safeguard citizens and maintain public trust in technology.

Next steps include consultations with legal experts and stakeholders to draft the proposed legislation, with an emphasis on creating a comprehensive framework that addresses both current and future challenges. The Law Ministry is expected to hold meetings in the coming weeks to discuss the specifics of the legislation and gather input from various sectors.
