Pakistan Reaffirms Firm Opposition to Veto Power Expansion at UNSC
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has strongly reiterated its firm opposition to any expansion of veto power in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), advocating instead for a more democratic, accountable, and representative international body. Speaking during ongoing debates on global governance reform, Pakistani diplomats emphasized that granting veto rights to additional countries would exacerbate existing paralysis and inequality within the international framework.
Addressing the UN Intergovernmental Negotiations framework, Islamabad maintained that the veto power has historically hindered the Security Council from taking effective action against aggression, foreign occupation, and ongoing human rights violations. Officials underscored Pakistan’s active alignment with the Uniting for Consensus group, which advocates for expanding elected, non-permanent seats to ensure fair representation for all regional blocs rather than creating new centers of privilege.
The policy stance highlights Pakistan’s long-standing foreign policy commitment to multilateralism and sovereign equality among all member nations. Diplomats noted that reinforcing privileged status for a select few powerful states directly contradicts the democratic spirit of the UN Charter and further alienates developing nations from participating meaningfully in global peacebuilding efforts.
As discussions surrounding Security Council restructuring continue in New York, Pakistan reiterated its pledge to work alongside international partners for consensus-driven reforms. Islamabad affirmed that genuine reform must prioritize equitable geographical distribution and operational transparency over the concentration of geopolitical power.
