Pakistan Urges Diplomacy as Iran Dismisses US Threats Amid Regional Tensions
ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar emphasized the necessity of ongoing dialogue and diplomacy during a recent phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, as tensions escalate in the region amid the US-Iran conflict and renewed hostilities in Yemen.
In the conversation, the two ministers addressed the evolving regional dynamics and the current meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers taking place in Baghdad. Mr. Dar highlighted the critical role of sustained diplomatic efforts in tackling regional challenges, with both sides agreeing to maintain close communication.
The Iranian Foreign Minister reiterated Tehran’s rejection of intimidation from the US while expressing openness to dialogue. He also reaffirmed that the proposal for a seven-day reopening of the Strait of Hormuz remains on the table, indicating Iran’s willingness to engage in discussions despite the heightened tensions. Furthermore, Iran’s new defense minister warned of potential ‘enormous damage’ to the US should attacks against Iran resume, underscoring the precarious nature of the situation.
As the conflict in Yemen continues to draw international concern, the Pakistani and Egyptian Foreign Ministers condemned the recent Houthi attacks and discussed coordination efforts under the R-4 framework. The ongoing dialogue among regional powers is crucial for stabilizing the situation and preventing further escalation.
