Pensioner Appeals to Ombudsman Over FBR’s Inactive Tax Status Error
ISLAMABAD: A senior citizen taxpayer has formally challenged the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) after being declared ‘Inactive’ on November 1, 2026, due to alleged errors in tax computation related to his Behbood/pensioner certificate income. The pensioner has sought intervention from the Federal Tax Ombudsman (FTO) to rectify this situation, emphasizing the need for accountability in tax administration.
The complainant asserts that both his grievance regarding incorrect tax calculations and his request for an extension are still pending resolution. He argues that the FBR’s classification as ‘Inactive’ not only jeopardizes his financial stability but also undermines the integrity of the tax system, which should protect the rights of all taxpayers, especially vulnerable groups like pensioners.
This case highlights broader implications for the tax administration in Pakistan, raising concerns about the efficiency and transparency of the FBR. As the government pushes for increased tax compliance and revenue generation, such incidents could deter citizens from engaging with the tax system, fearing bureaucratic errors and lack of recourse.
Moving forward, the FTO is expected to review the complaint and may initiate an investigation into the FBR’s practices. The outcome could set a precedent for how similar cases are handled in the future, potentially leading to reforms aimed at improving taxpayer services and safeguarding rights.
