PM Shehbaz Addresses AJK’s Recent Unrest, Affirms Rule of Law

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his dismay on Tuesday over the recent “unfortunate events” in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), asserting that the law has taken its course following the turmoil. His remarks came during a ceremony in Islamabad where he administered the oath to four newly appointed members of the AJK Council, nominated by the AJK Legislative Assembly.

During his address, PM Shehbaz reflected on the unrest, stating, “We all regretted it, wished that they did not do that. We all tried to make them understand with utter seriousness.” Although he did not specify any individuals, his comments appeared to reference the protests led by the now-banned Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), which have sparked significant unrest in the region.

The JAAC has been at odds with the government over various issues, particularly its demand to abolish the 12 refugee seats in the AJK Legislative Assembly. This contentious issue has led to violent protests across the region, culminating in the JAAC being declared a proscribed organization on June 5.

Looking ahead, the government is expected to continue addressing the underlying issues that have led to the unrest in AJK. The Prime Minister’s comments highlight the need for dialogue and resolution to prevent further violence and ensure stability in the region.
