Police Detain 30 Teachers in Karachi Amid Protest for Service Structure Reforms

Karachi Teachers Protest

KARACHI: At least 30 individuals were detained on Wednesday as police employed tear gas and baton charges to disperse a group of protesting teachers who were marching towards the Chief Minister House from the Karachi Press Club.

Hundreds of educators gathered outside the press club in response to a call from the All Sindh Primary Teachers Association, demanding reforms in the service structure that would delegate powers for transfers and postings to district officers. The protesters chanted slogans advocating for their rights as they attempted to advance towards the CM House.

As the demonstrators approached Fawara Chowk, police intervened, using force to push them back towards the press club. Traffic police confirmed that adjoining roads were closed to manage the situation. South Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Syed Asad Raza stated that prior to the protest, the administration had made efforts to engage in negotiations with education department officials to facilitate a dialogue.

This incident highlights ongoing tensions between educators and the provincial government regarding employment conditions and administrative powers. The teachers’ demands reflect broader issues within the education sector, raising questions about governance and the treatment of educators. Future protests may be anticipated if the government fails to address these concerns adequately.
