Punjab Assembly Panel Approves Christian Marriage Bill to Modernize Laws

LAHORE: A Punjab Assembly panel has unanimously approved the Christian Marriage Bill 2026, which aims to modernize the legal framework governing Christian marriages in the province. The bill, approved on Wednesday by the Standing Committee on Human Rights and Minority Affairs, will facilitate mandatory official registration of marriages with the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) and local union councils.

The bill, presented by MPA Falbous Christopher, seeks to repeal the colonial-era Christian Marriage Act of 1872. It proposes raising the minimum legal age of marriage for both brides and grooms to 18 years, a significant increase from the current ages of 16 for males and 13 for females. Christopher emphasized that this change is crucial for protecting against child marriages and ensuring genuine consent.

This legislative move is expected to have profound implications for the Christian community in Punjab, reinforcing legal protections and promoting social reforms. By aligning marriage laws with contemporary standards, the bill aims to enhance the rights of individuals and foster a more equitable society.

The next step involves the bill being presented to the full assembly for a vote. If passed, it will mark a significant advancement in the legal recognition of Christian marriages in Pakistan.
