Punjab Drug Regulatory Authority Halts Sales of Controversial Newborn Clamp

LAHORE: The Punjab Drug Regulatory Authority (PDRA) has issued an urgent directive to halt the sale of specific batches of umbilical cord clamps used on newborns, citing safety concerns.

The clamp, commonly referred to in layman’s terms as a “baby cord clip,” is a medical disposable device applied immediately after birth to manage the umbilical cord. The PDRA’s decision comes after reports raised alarms about potential health risks associated with these products.

This ban is significant for parents and healthcare providers, as the safety of newborns is paramount. The PDRA’s action reflects a growing emphasis on medical product safety in Pakistan, aiming to prevent any adverse effects on infants during a critical period of their development.

Moving forward, the PDRA plans to conduct a thorough investigation into the manufacturing practices of the affected products and will hold meetings with healthcare professionals to discuss alternative solutions for umbilical cord management.
