Punjab Government Imposes Rs10.6 Million Fine on Traders for Overpricing

LAHORE: The Punjab food safety and consumer protection department has levied fines totaling Rs10.627 million on traders across the province for overpricing essential commodities over the past week, Secretary Dr Kiran Khursheed announced on Wednesday.

During a series of inspections, authorities identified 19,902 violations where traders sold essential goods above the officially prescribed rates. Additionally, 2,168 locations were found lacking the mandatory display of price lists, further exacerbating the issue of consumer exploitation.

This crackdown on overpricing is part of the Punjab government’s broader initiative to protect consumers from inflationary pressures and ensure fair pricing in the market. The significant fines reflect the administration’s commitment to maintaining market integrity and safeguarding the interests of the public amid rising costs of living.

Moving forward, the Punjab government plans to intensify inspections and enforcement actions against violators. Authorities are also expected to launch awareness campaigns to educate consumers about their rights and the importance of reporting price discrepancies.
