Roti Prices Soar in Hyderabad as Skyrocketing Inflation Hits Citizens
HYDERABAD: Daily bread is becoming increasingly unaffordable for ordinary citizens across Pakistan as bread makers and naanbais in Hyderabad significantly raised the prices of roti and naan, citing unbridled food inflation and surging operational costs.
Local consumers expressed deep frustration over the sudden price hike, which has pushed basic sustenance out of reach for thousands of low-income families. Tandoor owners defended the price increase, pointing to sharp surges in the costs of fine wheat flour, natural gas, electricity tariffs, and essential baking ingredients. Citizens allege that severe administrative negligence and the failure of district price control committees to enforce official rates have allowed vendors to arbitrarily inflate prices.
The escalating cost of basic staples reflects the broader inflationary pressures weighing heavily on Pakistan’s domestic economy. Soaring energy prices, elevated transportation costs, and persistent market imbalances have collectively driven up the consumer price index, severely eroding the purchasing power of middle- and lower-income households nationwide.
In response to growing public outrage, local civil society groups and trade union representatives have urged provincial authorities and district administrations to immediately enforce statutory price controls and provide subsidized flour to commercial bakeries. District officials are expected to convene meetings with local naanbai associations in the coming days to review pricing structures and mitigate the public strain.
