Salaried Individuals Contribute Rs144 Billion in Tax, Outpacing Retail and Real Estate

ISLAMABAD: In a striking revelation, salaried individuals in Pakistan paid Rs144 billion in income tax during the first quarter of the current fiscal year, significantly surpassing the combined tax contributions of the retail and real estate sectors, which totaled only Rs54 billion. This data, released by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), highlights the disproportionate tax burden shouldered by salaried employees.

The figures indicate that the salaried class contributed Rs90 billion more in taxes than the two sectors combined between July and September. This disparity raises questions about the tax structure and its implications for economic equity. An FBR spokesperson noted, “The salaried class remains a crucial pillar of our tax system, and their contributions are vital for national development.”

This stark contrast in tax contributions underscores the challenges faced by the retail and real estate sectors, which have been grappling with economic pressures and regulatory hurdles. Economists suggest that the low tax contributions from these sectors could hinder overall economic growth and fiscal stability, potentially leading to increased reliance on salaried individuals to fill the revenue gap.

Looking ahead, the FBR plans to conduct a comprehensive review of the tax system to address these disparities and encourage broader compliance across all sectors. Stakeholders are urged to engage in discussions about reforming tax policies to ensure a more equitable distribution of the tax burden.
