Saudi Arabia Promises Serious Response Amid Escalating Houthi Attacks

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has vowed a “serious” response following a series of Houthi strikes that have targeted Riyadh’s international airport, resulting in the deaths of 18 individuals within a week. This escalation has plunged the world’s largest oil exporter into its most significant security crisis in over a decade.

Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman emphasized the gravity of the situation at an energy conference, stating, “Energy security can’t be taken for granted. The events of recent weeks are serious, our response must be equally serious. For Saudi Arabia, these circumstances have tested our infrastructure, our institutions, our people and our resilience.” The recent attacks have not only threatened lives but have also led to a spike in oil prices, which surged above $105 a barrel on Monday.

The ongoing conflict in Yemen, where a Saudi-led coalition supports the government against the Houthi rebels, has intensified as tensions rise in the broader US-Iran rivalry. The implications of these attacks extend beyond immediate security concerns, potentially destabilizing the region and impacting global oil markets, which rely heavily on Saudi production.

In light of the escalating violence, Riyadh’s international airport will remain closed as authorities assess the situation. The Saudi government is expected to engage in discussions with international partners, including Iran, which has expressed its willingness to help broker peace talks. The coming days will be crucial in determining the trajectory of this conflict and its repercussions on regional stability.
